12:00 – 1:00 PM CT
Oral cancer is by far the most devastating oral disease we encounter as dental health care professionals. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a known risk factor for oral cancer. It is within our scope of practice to inform and educate our patients about risk factors for oral cancer and counsel them on how to reduce risk and prevent oral cancer. Immunization protocol, safety and efficacy can be difficult and uncomfortable to discuss with patients. This course will arm the dental healthcare professional with evidence-based information regarding HPV, HPV immunization and provide counseling techniques for discussing immunization information and recommendations. Educational scenarios and verbiage for use in counseling patients in the dental office will be provided. Working in conjunction with M.D. Anderson, University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas Women’s University and Texas A&M University our projects aim is to provide Texas dental hygienists with education to talk about HPV, oral cancer, and HPV vaccination as an interprofessional effort to increase vaccination rates across the state. Participants will be asked to complete a 5-minute pre and post survey.
Learning Objectives:
After this course, participants will be able to:
- Have a clear understanding of HPV and its impact on patient health.
- Identify and discuss the immunization process and safety with patients
- Demonstrate effective patient counseling on risk reduction and immunization
